Any ideas for a single (straight) guy in his 40's to spend a wekend in SE Asia during a business trip? Places to stay, things to do, "nightlife," etc. I've heard there are beautiful resort areas, but want to hear from someone that's been there!

Bali is a great destination, good beaches, okay diving, fun surfing, great scenery, cultural shows and temples and plenty of night life. Kuta has the night life, Sanur the more upscale resorts.

Penang is worth a weekend if you've never been there. Fair beaches, little nightlife.

Singapore has plenty of history, culture with Sentosa Island and many museums. The night safari at the zoo is interesting. Plenty of nightlife, shopping and accommodations. It is the most expensive the SE Asian locations. Many hotels from the budget, 'rent by the hour', Hotel 81 in Geylang to the big names like Intercontinental, Conrad & Hilton.

Singapore area could include the nearby Indonesian islands of Bintam and Batam. Both are about a 1 hour ferry boat ride away. Bintan has many nice resorts, good golfing, fair beaches and no nightlife. Batam is an industrial island. It has plenty of sleazy night life and not much else. A tour of Vietnamese refuge village is a worthwile trip. Panorama Regency is an inexpensive but very nice hotel in Batam.

Hat Yai, Thailand has good nightlife, but not much else. Songkla, Thailand has nice beaches and resorts, little nightlife.

I see you what you need. If you want a night life I'll say visit Bali or Singapore.
In Bali you can also have beautiful beaches, adventure in nature, taste of unique traditional culture and heritage, and peaceful day also since they have good golf courses, swimming pools by the hills, and really good spas for massage and reflexion.
Singapore on the other hand offers a good night life too but the package is different. There you will have more metropolitan city like great malls, boat ride on the bays, the singapore flyer, but i would say no beaches. Only a human made beach in sentosa and you can't really enjoy it.
So it's your choice, but since you're single I would recommend Bali first. It's like the magnet of the universe. You can see people almost from every countries in the world. Singapore too, but Bali have more since it's bigger. And in singapore too much business tourists but in Bali every tourists is in the holiday spirit LOL so they'll be more interested to get to know you.

if you go to bali, kuta is the best place to stay, especially if you include "nightlife" in your schedule.
The Santika Beach Hotel in Kuta is just perfect. it has cottages with reasonable price, near places of "interest", easy access from airport.
it's also within walking distance to several nightclubs (ask the hotel concierge for directions), cool hangout places, restaurants, etc.
