"Punishment" meaning intentionally causing pain or discomfort to your child for the purposes of getting to do something that you want them to do, or to get them to stop doing something you don't want them to do.

I am asking for African-American responses because I have already located large numbers of Caucasians and others who believe in non-punitive parenting.

The responses to my question only prove that this country is suffering from very high rates of illiteracy.
Since when is the term "African American" offensive? My husband is white, and my child is half white. Racist???LOL. Some of you need help! My question is directed towards African Americans for a reason. If you don't understand the reason, WHY ANSWER THE QUESTION?

Poor Chica! I guess it just goes to show - people who hit their children are vicious with their words as well. Why am I not surprised?
The question as to why ANYONE would hit their children was asked recently by a young African American boy: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Al4mCW30.lnJkhE4BB9TtOXsy6IX?qid=20061228161159AA6Is9y&show=7#profile-info-b602df6ebbc9649a70c64d0b1d445bfbaa
I hope that many more children begin to question their upbringings.
Being but a cracker, I cannot answer this question truly, but I sure hope to see as many anti-spanking families as possible.

That is the biggest bunch of crap i ever read. You really are full of yourself aren't ya - i read your other post too and that guy was right, you are wierd!
I'm WHITE (gasp) and i spank my child (gasp).
She's 2 1/2 and when need be, i cup my hand to make a sound and swat her behind. I never touch her skin, but the cupping sound is just enough to get her attention.
Signifying a certain color is very discriminative and offensive and i for one am highly offended.
You people are so so quick to jump up and throw racism in our face for the smallest of things and here you are seperating!
These are the kind of questions that really really get under my skin....maybe that's what you wanted from this board or just by asking such an asanine question

i would never beat my child as a form of punishment. i do give a spat on the butt which i barely do. i think time outs and priveledges being taken away works better. beatings/ and too much spankings just bring on aggressive behavior.
remailer that is an ignorant comment. i used to work for a prison and most of the people in there were white. 84% to be exact.

I don't believe in beating a child, but I do believe in DISCIPLINING a child. I have to be the parent I wouldn't dare letting my child run over me, it will only cause problems in the near future.
Person before me I dont agree with you I dont care what race you are if you ened up in jail you in there......I know some people of my race that was raised correctly and they are in jail....please dont stereotype

THAT IS THE MOST STUPID THING YOU CAN DO FOR A KID, You need to show punishment so the kid will not end up in jail, But then again you did say a African american child, And you wonder why 80% of people in jail are black....

spare the rod, spoil the child im not african american, i don't believe in child abuse, but i do believe in punishing, time out and spankings, if your child has no respect for your authority, he will never respect anyone elses authority, granted all we can do is teach our children to do right and whether or not they do is their decision but i would like to know i tried! my girls will not run all over me for the rest of their lives i don't cut them down, call them names, or punch them in the face but i do punish them and they know whos boss and whats right and wrong!
