I did a project somewhat related to this last year. It has something to do with neurotransmitters that chocolate releases, and their influences on the brain chemical Serotonin. Serotonin plays a big part in mood, particularly happy, positive mood, and it is equally a big factor related to depression when absent.
I wouldn't use the word 'substitution', but chocolate provides a kind of satisfaction to the body. If a woman 'needed' sex, then ate chocolate, she wouldn't be sexually satisfied, but her body may feel a bit better. This reaction is unique to women because of the fluctuations we are constantly experiencing with oestrogen, progesterone, serotonin and blood sugar ( this is all also tied into PMS).
It is a very real phenomenon, don't let anyone tell you that it's not. I'm sorry that I can't give you real definite facts, but like I said, this is comming from a university project I did early last year.

Although I do not agree with the notion that chocolate is a substitute for sex for any woman. Chocolate and sex both release endorphins and seratonin which give women the feeling of being satisfied. Also in a culture where skinnier is better, chocolate shares a temptation factor with sex.

You should've watched Dr. Phil today, someone was on there who explained it a bit. I caught a few seconds of it. Seems chocolate elicits the brain to release chemicals that are also released during sexual arousal.

Blame it on serotonin.
Chocolate increases the serotonin level in your brain and makes you feel good.
It is much cheaper and better tasting than Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa...

I don't know about substitute but it has something in it that gives your hormones a boost. Sex is still better.
