Variation among species is required for the evolution of the species.
Members of a species carry some genes that do not appear to be useful to the organism in its present environment. This is due to the reason that the environment is constantly changing .This unuseful genes can only be removed by variation of the genes.
Successful species tend to have a wide variety of these types of genes(i.e.,genes with genetic variation); they provide a species as a whole with a genetic diversity that enables the species to better adapt to changes in the surrounding environment.

For mixing the gene pool. The more chances there are for survival the more likely survival will be achieved. In other words, the environment is constantly evolving. What was deemed as a strong trait yesterday might be considered a weakness today because of constantly changing environment.

survival basically. more variation means that a species will be able to survive through extreme environmental changes since those organisms with favorable traits survive and reproduce while those with unfavorable traits die off. thats natural selection working.
