Hope someone may be able to help. It is of personal importance that I know the reason why. Basically this man entered the UK and ten years later claims that he is unable to leave the UK as his passport was confiscated on entering the country.

Can anyone give me a realistic answer here? I feel the same regarding terrorists ect I assure you. This guy has been in a relationship with my cousin for 4 years....some things he is saying just don't add up although he is a lovely guy etc etc....it seems as though there is something not right in the fact that he is 'unable to get a uk passport or visa'.....would you assume that he may be an illigal immigrant?

I can't be sure, but the most likely reason is that he came on a false document, but was allowed to enter because he claimed asylum. His asylum claim may have since been rejected, but by then he had been given a national insurance number and just got on with his life - this couldn't happen now, but things were very lax back then. Alternatively, he may have been granted asylum, but never applied for UK citizenship, so would have no passport.

Another possibility, sadly, is that the Home Office simply lost his passport, while processing an asylum claim or any other kind of visa extension application. This is still a common occurance.

On the other hand, how do you know that anything he has told you about his origins is correct? It may be that having started off with an untrue story, for whatever reason, it's just easier for him to continue with it than to try and explain all of the truth. The lives of people in these situations can be very complicated and pressurised.

You need to consider how important it is to you to know the truth about this person. I deal with many people who have claimed asylum. I usually don't ask why they are here, as I would be pressuring them to either trust me or continue lying, about things that are intensely personal. I try to simply accept them as they are - some are "bogus", some are "genuine", but all are human beings who come to me in need.

At the same time, it is important that you protect yourself emotionally and in every way.

Good luck, and I hope this was helpful.
