Read that. Think Long and Hard. Are you truely sure that you are prepared to bring a Weim into your home? If you don't have a fenced in yard, you will have a difficult time finding a reputable breeder or rescue who will allow one of their dogs go home with you. Speaking of back yards, don't think that you can just dump a Weim in said backyard, and forget him. This is an active breed that needs human stimulation. A Weim left to his own devices in a back yard or a house can quickly turn into a one dog demolition team! Digging, chewing, you name it.

Since I don't know you, or your situation, I can't say much, but if you are looking for a first dog experience, a Weim is realistically not a good choice.

There is alot more that I could go into, but I am hoping that this will inspire you to research the breed extensively on your own. :)

Of course, if you have your heart set, there is little any stranger at a keyboard can say to sway someone. That said, good luck, and if you do decide to buy a Weim, PLEASE make sure that the sire and dam (father and mother) have had hip and preferably elbow x-rays cleared. Hip or Elbow Displasia is no laughing matter, even though there are far more treatment options these days.

Weimaraners are fast and powerful dogs, but are also suitable home animals given appropriate training. From adolescence, a Weimaraner requires extensive exercise in keeping with an energetic hunting dog. No walk is too far, and they will appreciate games and play in addition. An active owner is more likely to provide the vigorous exercising, games, or running that this breed needs. Weimaraners are high-strung and easily excitable, requiring appropriate training to learn how to calm them and to help them learn to control their behavior. Owners need patience, as this breed is particularly rambunctious during the first year and a half of its life. Like many breeds, untrained and unconfined young dogs often create their own diversions when left alone, such as chewing house quarters and furniture. It should never be forgotten that the Weimaraner is a hunting dog and therefore has a strong, instinctive prey drive. Weimaraners will tolerate cats, as long as they are introduced to the cats as puppies, and many will chase and frequently kill almost any small animal that enters their garden or backyard. In rural areas, most Weimaraners will not hesitate to chase deer or sheep. However, with good training, these instincts can be curtailed to some degree. Those familiar with the breed acknowledge two common behavioral disorders.

The first common behavior disorder is the propensity of many Weimaraners to suffer from severe separation anxiety. Manifestations of this behavior disorder include panicked efforts to rejoin the owner when separation occurs, excessive drooling, destructive behaviors, and associated injuries such as broken teeth or cut lips. Behavior modification training and medications may reduce the severity of symptoms associated with this disorder in some Weimaraners. However, the breed is generally refractory to such treatment and behavior modification training efforts. As individuals of the breed age the severity of separation anxiety symptoms decrease somewhat, but do not completely abate.

The second common behavior disorder is unacceptable aggression in some Weimaraners. Early and extensive socialization of young dogs can prevent this. However, as the original purpose of the breed was to assist in hunting large game (e.g. bears) and to provide personal as well as property protection a certain amount of aggression is innate to the breed.

I surely have a 4 12 months previous weimaraner and could't think of ever possessing yet another variety of dogs yet they do require loads of interest and excercise. Weimaraners have loads of potential and ought to be with their vendors each and all of the time. i'm confident each and each weim is distinctive yet speaking of mine in my opinion (and many others we've come into touch w/) listed decrease than are the solutions on your questions: a million. There are some wellbeing subjects linked w/ weimaraners that are common in maximum great breed canines - hip dysplacia, bloat, and so on. 2. they have a tendency to be great with little ones as long as you prepare them accurately as they have loads of potential and don't understand their own potential. With suitable preparation they are superb kin canines 3. Weimaraners are shielding yet do no longer tend to be aggressive. My weimaraner is all bark. He couldnt be greater friendly and affectionate yet will certainly permit human beings understand he's there while they first attitude the domicile. 4. Weimaraners have been prevalent to bark lots (distinctly while they are bored). My weim barks while different canines walk through and while human beings knock on the door yet he in many situations calms down rapidly. 5. Weimaraners desire ALOT of excercise. they desire important time on and rancid the leash each and every day. I in many situations take my weim out 40 5 min interior the morning and night run with him. in case you're no longer energetic and don't want to do exterior activities, it somewhat isn't any longer the breed for you. it somewhat is significant that human beings understand the time and interest that weims require as many human beings don't comprehend what they are shifting into. i in my opinion love each and everything approximately this breed even yet it does require loads of my time. they desire preparation and are very obdurate yet they are additionally the main loving dogs that only desires to be touching you each and all of the time. in case you desire a low maintenance dogs, are not getting a weimaraner!

I would seriously think some more. If you don't have a large fenced-in yard and a LOT of time to devote to training for the first 2-3 years, I would consider another breed. I had a friend who got one because she thought it was "cute." She was single and worked full time. This dog completely destroyed the apartment she was living in--tore up the carpet, chewed up the sofa and chairs. Like most dogs, Weimeraners can be amazing pets, but they are a high-energy breed and require a lot of work.

Weimaraners are very hard work with unique personalities. A lot of people get them cos they look cute, but dont realise the work involved. They are very bouncy, eat you out of house and home and drive you crazy. If you have alot of time on your hands and enjoy a challenge then a weimaraner is perfect!!

nice breed, but very very active working dogs needing high levels of excersize. That means at least 30 minutes off the lead running per day not a couple of ambles around the block on a lead. The males tend to be aggressive.

If your not home all the time, don't get a female.....take it from me and a friend who has had 2 and 2 vets....THEY'RE CRAZY, unless someone is with them all the time like a stay at home mom. Males have a better temperment when alone. They are great dogs too!

I don't know anything about them but they are fantastic looking dogs. The one in the New Order video was cool.

Max is right, they are a bit insane! Do a lot of reading about the breed before getting one, that way you know what you are getting into.

Iv'e always found labradors to be the best breed of dog, as long as you walk them twice a day and don't give them treats/leftovers.
