Yes the shoes should be left at the door respecting hygiene and cleanliness -
ALSO
1. According to customs in the Eastern Countries, specially in India, it is etiquette and people never go with shoes in ones house or even inside their own house.
2. It is also for respecting the feelings of the host. I feel we need not wait for the owner to tell us to remove it at the door and enter. There is nothing wrong in removing and if the owner compels you to come in with the shoes you can do so. In some cases the owner will be not be able to tell you to remove the shoes outside and he will be put into awkward situation.-

Yes regarding cleanliness and hygiene. But it almost all the culture they request to keep footware out of the house. But now-a-days they have changed it, they use different sandals or shoes , they use one footware outside the house and the other one inside. So in the same way when they enter the sacred or gods room they have to leave their footware.

It is great way to respect a sanctity / hygeine of a hose hold. i am an Asian, and this is rule of thumb.. We pray at house and have our deities occupying a prominent place in the house . So the practice goes without saying . Scientifically ...it is so sensible to leave out the muck, dust , etc which you may have gathered while you were on a trip outside. Speacially if the house hold has smaller kids it makes perfect sense for this little crawlers cause they pick up anything handy and lying around the floor .
make sure you have clean pair of socks, the host hand over slippers to you !

It depends on the culture of the area, and the practices of the people who live in that house.
Where I used to live in Canada, people usually took off their shoes when entering the house, but where I currently live, it isn't an expectation. People will tell you if they would like you to do something other than the custom of the area. (Or if you see a mat by the door with some shoes on it, you can just take them off, because that's obviously the practice of the house.)

Basically footwares are worn to keep yourself hygiene and not to be attacked by the foreign bodies...... keeping this in mind we should make a point that we leave our footwares at the door which would help to keep the environment inside the home under hygienic conditions......

It depends on where you are. Different cultures have different expectations on what to do when entering a home. For example, in Japan it would proper to remove your shoes. In America, it would be courteous to ask about your host's household procedure.

I look around and see if the occupants are wearing shoes - then do as they do. In our house, we like to keep the shoes at the door. Some people have "indoor shoes" or "indoor slippers." Mostly, I wear socks in the house.

It's been with me since child hood. Learned behavior you could say. Just helps keep the carpet clean and the house clean. Hygiene? Maybe, if there were cow poo on my shoes.

Just follow the suit.....if your host removes shoes before entering then you may do the same or simply ask them because in many houses the guests are not asked to remove shoes as they sit in the living/drawing/outer room only.
Yes, before entering kitchen or bedroom please ensure that your host doesnot mind your entry with bacteria/germs-ridden shoes.
