get either a miniature schnauzer or a miniature poodle or better yet contact your local humane society and they will be able to help you pick out a dog in their care that fits all of your requirements and you will be giving a deserving dog a second chance at happiness and a forever home. I am single and don't even have a yard per say since Iive in an apartment with some lawn around it.

Sheltie's are great dogs for small yards and houses. They are excellent with kids. Make sure that you check the blood line on the dogs. If you buy one that has been inbreed,(yes, it happens) they might be skittish. Shelties with a good blood line will be playful and kind. I have had 2 shelties and love them.
Good Luck.

Try a cockapoo. They are much smaller, and don't shed. I own one and he is great with my two kids, 18 months and 7 months. Never has nipped or growled. They also are content to be house pets and don't need a ton of yard space for exersice.

look at rescue dogs they are great for family companions. With kids, if you get a dog too small they can get nervous, but poodles really are great kid dogs, as are beagles, do some checking at www.petfinder.com. They have great dogs of all sizes that are looking for families to love them.
