Don't worry it doesn't really bother me. It's like a low hissing noise i can easily ignore.

It is normal to hear a quiet humm, yes. This is just your ears straining to hear sound.

Tinnitis is a high pitched whine that is always there, quiet or not. If your surrounding is loud enough, you may not notice the whine. I have it, it is very very annoying. Someday I shall go completely bonkers over it, I suspect.

that is what happen when you have tinnitus....you can be any age. mine is from the loud concerts and loud music with head phones

tinnitus never goes away, sometimes you just do not notice the ringging

i can't answer your question, but i sympathize, b/c i have the exact same problem. i do know that some medications can make it worse. i've also noticed that is seems worse for me after i've had alot of coffee or tea. (maybe it's caffeine overload?) sorry for your pain!
