I've got long, naturally straight hair which I've never considered manually straightening before, but I was given a straightening iron for Christmas and thought I may as well try it out! I'm just planning on trying it out tonight, but should I use a special serum or cream on my hair first to stop it from burning? I washed and conditioned my hair this morning so would it be okay to go ahead and use the flat iron by itself just this once?

it depends what kind of serum or gel you have. putting something on it can just make it greasy and dirty feeling whenever you finish staightning your hair... and i personally don't like that feeling. but of course it's recommended that you put something on it, because over time your hair will get burned and dry. you might want to go ask around to some beauty stylists and ask them of a good and affordable serum that you can use. i personally don't use anything in my hair, only every once in a while (when i remember), and so far my hair is fine. i straighten after i take a shower and blow dry my hair, then i go to sleep and usually don't have to do anything in the morning. but you said your hair is naturally straight, so you really dont even need to straighten your hair... straightening it may make it flat and dull. good luck and i hope this helps!-cioa

+ Yes, I use Fructis "Sleek and Shine" Straightening Serum.
I've tried everything else and that's the one I like best.
If your hair is already damaged it will help repair it and
If it not, then it will prevent your hair being damaged from
Blow drying, Straightening, Flat Ironing, Curling, Dyeing your hair.
You should NEVER Straighten your hair without putting a product on your hair first.

+TIP+
Put on the Serum first,
Then use the Straightener,
after that put on a little more Serum.
(you don't want to put on too much because it will look greasy.
so put on a little at a time.)
This will help keep it looking smooth
because when you use the straightener it will dry up all the product and your hair will have fly aways.

I hope this helps you.
