NO. But I do know that I have "cut off" certain playgrounds, playmates and working situations to keep myself from sinning. Y'shua knew this was a "hard saying" and he meant it to be exactly that to show the seriosity of keeping things around us that cause us to sin, so he meant to get our attention and get our attention he did.
For me, living in impoverished areas where the low-class to no-class people live causes me to sin, because of their disrespect for others and their disregard for all but their most carnal desires, even at the expense of other people's peace and property. Or working in a place where the base, the vile, the lazy, the cruel, the dishonest, etc. also work causes me to sin. Things and situations which cause me such anger that I cannot control my tongue are those which I avoid. Cuz I can either choose to cut off the situations and people who anger me so, or I can cut out my tongue. The least painful choice is obvious and is the one I choose.

You don't need to do that to remain faithful. When Jesus said cut off your hand if it causes you to sin, he was using an analogy. He was saying, if something in you life is leading you to sin, take that out of your life. He definetely didn't mean if you sin with your hand cut it off, it's more like if you friend is leading you into sin, stop hanging around with him. I can't think of any way your hand could actually make you sin, it can carry out a sin, but that's completely different. Anyone who cuts off a body part because of that is clearly not right with the Lord and has interpereted the scriptures wrong. God doesn't want us to hurt ourselfs, he only wants us to keep things that make us sin out of our life.

I think Jesus did was being serious when he said that, but thats becaues as humans we can't understand how horrible a sin really is. Jesus is trying to explain to us just what to compare it to. Since we don't realize how bad sin really is, we don't cut out the bad parts.
Lil bit said that the message was from the old testament. It's actually found in the gospel books (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) So that would actually be new testament stuff. Proof of that would be that Jesus said it.

No, not personally, but many of the Saints of the Catholic Church, especially the Martyrs, suffered many such tortures at the hands of pagans and other merciless nonbelievers because of their relentless belief in Christ.

Yes... well, my hub knows someone who cut off his own hand. Claimed Satan was forcing him to use it to do evil. I think he spent a few yrs in a Psych Ward, though I'm not sure. Fortunately, I have not met this man......... I would be too tempted to start ****.
