Hi there, I understand the budget constraints but Freecycle is not a great idea for car seats. You should never use a car seat that you dont know the full history of. I wouldn't trust a complete stranger with the safety of my child. I must agree though that it is really good for lots of other things. I have offered and received from my local Freecycle.
With regards to where to get a good seat, try Babies r us or Argos. They are having January sales at the minute so have some really good deals.

There is this really cool resource called freecycle.com. You can join online to be a member of one in your community and post a message stating what you need, often times you will find that someone from your own neighborhood will respond with a free one to give you. This organization works wonders. You can give away free items and receive free items. But everything must be free! check it out - it is really worthwhile, especially if you have children.
