What a question. What a vague and confounding question. So simple in its presentation, yet so complex in its meaning.

There's no one answer to such a question. There are so many great places and such varying tastes, it's so hard to say. let me tell you this, my buddy used to be the Unknown Food Critic for WWL-TV, and he did a hunt for the best poboy a couple times and came up with some good ones. Unfortunately, some of the true classic poboy jernts were destroyed by Katrina (I put the link below to some of his reviews. Good stuff, you should check it out). But never fear, there are still literally dozens of places to choose from.

The thing about a great poboy, is that I've always found there to be two benchmarks when judging a place's quality: the shrimp poboy and the roast beef. Oyster can be just as important at times as well as some other off-the-bench players like the hamburger poboy, the grilled ham 'n' cheese, or a catfish. I can't go through every single place I know of, but I'll give you some of the top performers:

Roast Beef: Parkway Bakery & Tavern - Great, great, great
Parasol's - messy & yummy
Bear's (on the Northshore) - I don't know how often you make it across the lake, but these guys have their roast beef act together.

Shrimp: Parkway (again)- solid performer
Danny & Clyde's - believe it or not, they make a really good one
Crabby Jack's - a little pricey, but loaded

That should get you started. After all of those, hit up: Domilese's, Bobby's Seafood (in Harahan), Rag's (on the Northshore), Frankie & Johnny's, and, and, and I guess that's good.

I'm sure you'll get more than enough opinions from everyone else, happy eatin'.

Central Grocery is open; but they only have muffaletas, which are fantastic. For a po-boy, go to Sammie's Deli, on Live Oak Street in Metairie, right over the parish line from Orleans.

I haven't been there since before katrina, but there was a place my wife and I found the day we were leaving in the Quarter called Johnny's. Our po-boys were so good, we went back and bought seconds even though we weren't hungry anymore.

Casamento's 4330 Magazine St.
New Orleans, Louisiana. I'm sure you can read a review of the restaurant on-line somewhere!

Look on the Food Network web site for Rachel Ray's tasty travels. I don't know if the Central Grocery is still there or not and I am not sure if they have Po Boys but if not get their muffalata. It is to die for!!!
