Well its been 3 days so you may have already figured this out but here goes. You probably already know that you have a night setting on your camera, the symbol looks like a star and crescent moon. Its one of your automatic settings and you've probably already tried it. So the next thing you could try is the aperture mode, a big A on the dial. Use your "Five-way navigation pad" and make the aperture as large as possible, which will be the lowest number, 2.8 when zoomed out all the way and 3.1 when zoomed in. Set the number the lowest it will go. If that doesn't work go with full manual, set the aperture the lowest number and make the shutter speed longer, 1/60 will be too fast for most low light settings except with a flash. Try a shutter speed of 1/4 of a second. The problem with that long of a shutter speed is camera shake so get a tripod or set it on a table or something.
Remember, the camera doesn't take the pictures, you do. Experiment with your settings and you will find that your camera is a pretty good camera. I Have a Canon Digital Rebel XTi and my aperture doesn't open up that much until I buy my next lens.
