A good way to find this out experiencially would be to watch some videos of, for instance, the male principal dancers of ABT. Some of the things they do would be literally impossible if they did not have the leg strength that they do--for example, when executing the large jumps that take them literally five feet off the ground. I'd suggest that you look into this and then draw some conclusions of your own.
On a more practical and informative note, I was/am a dancer--have been for years. As a dancer, the body is not really separable into different parts--one part affects all others. Doing pirouettes, for instance, relies not only on great balance and ab strength but on the solidity of your legs and the strength of your ankles. The question is almost like asking why vocal artists must have good breath support in order to sing well. It's integral; it's inseparable.
Hope this helps.

Because, when u get into the hard stuff its mostly with ur legs jumps, leaps, spins so it is ur legs and ankles that are the most support they should also have strong abbs...but that isnt rly important im a gymnast and u need ur whole body to be strongfor bars floor beam and vault but dances dont use theyre arms rly and little bit of there abbs but not like gymnasts do there whole body is hardcore fit and dances well is mostly with ur legs....hope that answers ur ? well xoxo~*JASMINE*~

directional movement is guided, executed and extended thru the legs. Lunging, leaps, kicking, etc. carry the constant shifting movements needed to articulate a dance.A conditioned core and a healthy heart are great assets to any dancer as well.

I think it has a lot to do with the feet being connected to the rest of the body by the legs.

Well, you do use your legs alot. Like any muscle used continuously, it becomes very strong. Consider the mind, more it is used in the proper way, the more stronger, in other words..legs over matter...not mind over matter in this catergory!
