I am planning on getting a breast reduction. My husband is supportive but is worried about a lose of nipple sensation. Most likely the nipples will need to be removed.
Has anyone else had a breast reduction where the nipples were removed and experienced lose of nipple sensation?

This does have me worried.

For those of you who don't know the procedure: Doctors sometimes remove and reattach the nipples. They don't stay removed forever. Just thought I would clarify that for those who have never heard of the procedure.

Sometimes you do. I had a breast reduction and have nipple sensation. Another person also had a reduction but has not regained nipple sensation yet.

http://www.breasthealthonline.com has a great forum and FAQ about breast reductions and its healing issues.

Nipple Sensation

I am 23 and had a reduction done at the beginning of January '09. The surgery was needed for the exact same reasons you are considering. I was a 36DDD and went down to a 36C. In any reduction the nipple has to be moved (that is normal for the procedure). Before the surgery, I had no sensation. My dr explained that this is normal. I just thought it was normal for me. The heavy weight of large breasts can actually stretch out the nerves to where you have no sensation. After the reduction, I regained full sensation..wow was I missing a lot. A lot of the after-effects depend on your surgeon and his/her skill. I did my homework and researched specifics about 5 different doctors before I amde a decision on the surgeon. Good luck on your surgery. I recommend it to anyone considering.

No Feeling In Nipple

Phew! Thanks for clarifying! I was beginning to worry about your doctor!

Yes, nipple sensation can be lost during this procedure. I have a friend who had it done, who says she has no nipple sensation at all.

I think there are other ways of doing it, though, where the nipples aren't compromised. I recommend that you talk to your doctor about your concerns, and see what options are available.

Yes it does sometimes... sometimes it comes back sometimes it don't.... whenever they remove stuff your nerves get damaged. So feeling will not be there... but it could come back with time.... Like when you fall and scrape your knee you don't feel the pain right away because the nerves were scratched, but feeling comes back... Or deep cuts that leaves scars, there is no feeling in the puffed up scar.... so it just depends... Most of the time it comes back... just make sure the doc is accreditable and has experience... if he has none then your feeling may not come back... just ask lots of questions... and see if he has had any patients willing to be contacted... and talk to them...
