As a fellow sufferer, I do the following successfully to reduce phlegm:

Use 'Rhinolast' nasal spray available on prescription from your GP, which opens up the nasal passages.
Avoid dairy products; Milk (use soya milk), chocolate, cheese, cream.
Drink fruit teas, avoid caffeine.

Phlegm may be of several different colors.

* "Healthy" phlegm is normally clear or white.
* Yellow phlegm is normally a sign of an infection, or a case of the common cold. The initial state of the common flu when the phlegm is still clear is the most infectious period. When the phlegm turns into yellow, the body is already taking care of the infection.
* Greenish or brownish phlegm is nearly always a sign of infection. Greenish or rusty phlegm or phlegm with rusty spots can also be a sign of pneumonia and/or internal micro-bleedings.
* Coughing up brown phlegm is also a common symptom of excessive smoking. This is due to resin sticking to the viscous texture of the phlegm and being ejected by the body.
* Another type of phlegm often associated with smoking is brownish gray in color. This variant is encased in clear saliva. When spread out, the brown-grey "core" is shown to be grainy in composition, as opposed to holding together. This is simply dust and other foreign matter and may be caused by damage to the cilia, as in COPD patients.

there is a product called mucinex that gets rid of mucus, and will help with phelgm as well. also, something else that helped my daughters was GNC brand of echinacea/goldenseal drops. not the pills, but the drops. every winter they get the "gunky" cough (as i call it) and this stuf helps them so much. (i do give them 4 or 5 droppers full, more than the recommended dose.)

it builds up at the back of the throat and in the nose, it could be caused by something irritating the linings, does he work in a dusty environment or perhaps listen to loud music in the confines of a car,try this -- 5 teaspoon of Tabasco sauce in a med glass of water and drink all in one go,or tilt his head back and put 3 drops of lemon juice into each nostril, both of these will clear any irritant.
hope this helps

Go to the drug store and ask for an expectorant. Check the ingredients and get Guafensin only with no other ingredients. Others (cough control) will have other things to suppress cough that you don't need and make you hyper.

the best i found was yes spit it out but try white vinegar about 2spoonfuls and 2spoonfuls of honey and fresh lemon juice 1 whole a few times a day, and before you to bed because when lying down it goes to the back of your throut.

the best thing to do is to avoid dairy products as they can cause a build up of phelgm....try that for a few weeks to see if there is any improvement..
