When it was uncovered a group of scientists walked together down into the pit to examine it. It suddenly emmitted a loud high pitched tone that hurt everyone's ears. Then later an obelisk of the same dimension was found orbiting around Saturn so a space ship was built to go and examine ------- Oh wait a minute. That was the story line on the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey.

It was built around the rock that is now housed inside the building, which is a piece of meteorite. Many religions worshiped at this place and the building was placed to protect the meteorite long before Islam came into existence. The reason this place is central to Islam is because it is believed that the Prophet Mohammed came in and kicked all of the revelers and false idols out of the building in the name of the one true God, much as Jesus Christ is believed to have thrown all of the money changers and other merchants out of the temple in the Judeo-Christian tradition. The Muslims believe the meteorite fell in the time of Adam and Ishmael and Abraham built the enclosure around it.
I don't know why Mohammad kissed the rock while he circled it seven times, but that is what I was told he did. Muslims today mimic the traditions of Mohammad in these practices.
