Would bleaching do anything other than turning it orange or some weird color? And if bleaching wouldn't work, would a blonde hair dye (not bleach) do anything?
The color I want to have it end up as is a burgandy color. I just need a way to lighten my hair before I dye it.

It's really hard to remove black permanent color from your hair. More than likely it'll have to be stripped (with bleach) and you never know what color it'll throw.
But you could try mixing powder bleach with shampoo and water and kind of massaging it through your hair till you see it start to lift/change. Then wash it, dry it and put your next color in.
That might help to break down some of the pigment, be careful, and keep watching it.

you need to seriously go see a beautician to do this.. having jet black hair can be tricky to high light. now if you have colored your hair jetblack, you can get a color remover, that will strip most that color out and then redye it...I would double check first though before doing this with a hair dresser.

I'm not sure if this is the answer you're looking for but if you wash your hair in regular dandruff shampoo it can take alot of color out so does washing your hair in dishwashing soap. There are also dye stripping kits but I'm not too sure how well they work..

You need to seek professional help. Even Nick Arrojo didn't take on this project he sought out a specialist.
