I am curious about this process, and if anyone can share experiences, good and bad. I am likely having a 10 week old Boxer pup shipped on an airplane. A few of my concerns are not picking the puppy up in its comfortable environment, and it just arriving terrified and traumatized. Could it effect the relationship with the dog? Is it silly for me to be concerned about these things? Any detail, warnings, reasons not to worry, etc, would be great.

Although many puppies handle air travel fine (other than some initial trepidation), there are other things to consider:

If possible, you really should see the environment in which your puppy was born and talk to the breeder in person. This would give you a great idea of how responsible they really are.

You should also try to meet at least one of the parents (sometimes the sire isn't available).

When you allow a puppy to be sold and shipped to you sight unseen, you're basically saying "I'll take whatever I get, without really knowing about where it came from".

Here's some more info that might help you:

Boxers are popular enough that you may be able to find a responsible breeder closer to you (not sure what area you're in).

unless the breeder or someone working with them actually comes with the pup on its trip its probably a puppy mill not a real breeder and in that case the animal will probably have more issues than you even want to think about. No respectable breeder would send an animal alone to an unknown person regardless of how many phonecalls you've had. Personally I wouldn't get an animal from a place far enough away that it has to be flown for me to pick it up there are plenty of local breeders and shelters that you could have gone to and its much safer for the dog and for you. Its silly for you not to be concerned your getting a puppy that could have serious problems they have your money and they are a plane ride away REAL SMART on your part. Hope its the right type of pup you want atleast I know people who tried this that didn't get the right breed and the puppy they got was nearly dead from disease and improper care and when they called the "breeder" they didn't get a response. the dog was put to sleep and they went to a local shelter and got a healthy animal.

I would not buy from a breeder that ships their puppies. Normally if they will ship their puppies then they could careless about them.

well I would say make sure when you have it shipped you have to sign for it when you pick it up. Cause I heard in some air ports if it's after hours they will just sit the crate on the luggage go round and any body can just pick the dog up. I dont think it would effect the relationship as long as you know the puppy will need some quiet time to calm down. good luck

Sorry, but good breeders aren't going to ship their puppies to someone they haven't even met. You'll have more things in the future to worry about health wise than what you are worrying about now more than likely. I would expect a puppy that young would be pretty scared but I don't think they'll hold it against you. Next time though, don't support irresponsible breeders, look for one who actually wants to meet you and wants to know where thier puppy will be living.

The only reason it is silly is because there are shelters and breeders around you with great dogs! Boxers are not rare so it is not like you have no boxers near you, putting a dog through a terrible experience when there must be 20 boxers in driving distance from you is selfish.

I have had pups shipped a lot of times and have never had a problem. Just be there when it arrives, and remember that paramount on the pups mind will be "gotta go pee".

I had my pup flown to me and it wasn't traumatised at all. Sure it was a little nervous, it's just left mum, new people etc but all puppies are. The breeder can choose to medicate the dog so it's sedated and not so stressed by the adventure but with a puppy it's probably not necessary. They are a lot more acceptable then an adult dog.

I think it's silly because I'm sure there's a shelter within driving distance from you that has plenty of dogs that need you.
