We all have to be politically correct, not ask simple questions, have a sense of humor, and try not to offend anyone? What's the point of having opinions if you can't spread them or share them?

I'm not just talking about being politically correct. I'm talking about how we can't offend anyone. We can't even say Merry Christmas without we thinking we are offending someone in the world, and have to say Happy Holidays instead to include everyone.
Some groups can use racial epithets for themselves, but get offended when other groups use it (I wouldn't use them anyway, but it's an example).
If you ask questions about a country's tainted history, people get offended.
You can barely speak your mind in the world anymore without thinking that you are stepping on someone's toes.

I'm also not saying that we all need to be so bold as to be crusaders for our opnions and strike down those who don't believe as we do. I'm not saying that at all.
Rather, we all need to be open minded, and consider other opinions, and not be so hateful.
For all you know, this person with the exact opposite opinion from yours will change your mind.

why is it so important to you to express your opinion? What do you think about keeping potentially offensive opinions to yourself?

Every opinion is potentially offensive to someone, but I guess that's the beauty of an opinion. There's a line you cross when you purposly unleash your opinion just to be malicious.

I personally love hearing other people's perspectives on everything, and if their opinion differs from mine, I'm not going to be like, "Hey, you're an idiot, you're wrong", but rather explain why I feel the way I do. I'm a very open person, and it gets so irritating when people, I understand that you are standing to your beliefs and all, but they don't care to hear an opposing point of view.

I agree with you. Openess of mind and ability to accept others opinion, how conflicting it may be, is a very strong personality trait. You can never learn, if you cant listen and listen to diverse opinions. You stop learning the moment you think that you are right. So its good that you are bold enough to spread your opinion and yet able to listen to others.....

I agree with you. Political correctness is all well and good - but it is at the point where you cant say anything anymore. Heaven forbid a person makes a joke.

Oh, and lets ban the kids from celebrating christmas. Cant have chrissie decorations up in airports or shopping centres either. Obviously they are offensive to someone.

Banning of the use of the word 'mate' in parliament in canberra - yeah, cause THAT is extremely offensive.

Los Angeles Countys insistence of covering over with labels any computer networking protocols that mention master/slave jargon.

Changing the words to Baa Baa Black Sheep.

Banning police in england from saying "nitty gritty"

I really dont get it.

Why do we have to pander to those who are ultra sensitive? Nobody means any offence with most of these things. I know there are some words that are extremely offensive to people, but in general most things that we get into PC trouble for is harmless sayings that have been around for many years that no longer have the same meanings as they used to have.

I think it's important to be careful of hurting anyone -- we shouldn't purposely say something that could be offensive just because "other people are too sensitive and I can't talk about anything without offending anyone". But it's also foolish to take offense when none is intended. It also makes me wonder -- this is not a rhetorical question -- why is it so important to you to express your opinion? What do you think about keeping potentially offensive opinions to yourself?

I agree, too many people cry-babying about the word "god" on everything. I am an atheist, and it doesn't bother me to see anything with god on it. The people that complain about Christmas, means nothing to me. Why complain about people enjoying their holiday? Many celebrate for their children rather than for the religious aspect of it.
There used to be a lot of public executions in the old west, now it is too barbaric. Society is changing and getting more and more frail. Everybody off their Prozac? j/k
People are too busy pointing out what offends them rather than being considerate of what other people want or learning how to "accept" it for what it is.

That ticks me off too! I think bigger companies (Walmart, K-mart) are so scared because they know they'll piss the jews off by saying Merry Christmas, piss off the Christians by not mentioning Christ, and then everyone will be boycotting! There might be too much freedom, too many lawyers, and people that have nothing better to do. I'm not saying anymore, I don't want Jessie Jackson, or Jewish community leaders on my a** for being politically incorrect. lol Can't we all just get along?

Because, sometimes YOUR opinion is just that, YOUR opinion.
If you know it will hurt someone keep it to yourself.

its OK to have your own opinion, but use it wisely when sharing it with others.

IE: my opinion is that I think my friends new SUV is ugly! but she is so proud of it, I would be nice and simply smile to her and give her congrats....... not stand there and say oh my what an ugly suv you have.

remember what your mom taught ya? if you have nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all.

your opinions will only matter to those that agree with them. The others will just swarm you and inundate you with reverted thumbings.
