shih-tzu, bichon frise, chihuahua, pekingese. adopting using http://petfinder.com works well and gets an unwanted dog into a wanted family. sometimes adoption fees are $50 and up. I paid $400 for my pekingese (he's adorable) and about $300 for my shih-tzu (covers the spaying/neutering)

My shih-tzu is 12 lbs, my pekingese is 19 lbs. The bichon frise and shih-tzus do not shed their fur.

If you run out and get yourself something like a JRT you will start caring real quick about the "kind".

Do your research on breeds! Don't join up with the Moron League and jump head first into a disaster!

There are many wonderful small breeds, but not all will fit into your lifestyle. Go to a shelter and talk with someone who's job is to match people with breeds. It will be quite a learning experience for you (if you are as uneducated about dogs as you sound) and you will be VERY glad you did it BEFORE getting a dog you can't handle. Small doesn't mean easy.

You could try your local shelter or rescue group. If you don't care the breed, there are usually several small dogs that need good homes. A plus to this is that they are already neutered/spayed and they are current on all shots. Some even implant microchips that you can trace if he gets lost.
Here are a few websites...

Hope this helps!

Check out the Classified pages of your newspaper and talk to the people over the phone to see if it sounds like the trip is worth it. A Yorky would be healthy there in a warm climate. Also a poodle. Check out a search engine for dog breeds. Do the work. Hope you get one you will love.

Try your local animal shelter. They have a good assortment of dogs and can tell you what approx size the dog will grow to (if you chose a younger dog), they also have mature dogs that are already grown to their potential size. And besides, they all need a loving home! :)

It would depend on more things than what weight you want it at.

Like how much time you have for grooming, what level of activity you want from it, short fur, long fur etc etc.

Here is a site that lists a lot of small dog breeds, it might give you some clue as to what kind of dog you would like:

Go to your local humane society or if you have one SPCA, they are no-kill and do adoptabilty tests to make sure that the animal doesn't have any aggressive tendancies, they cannot be adopted out if they do, they will be humanly put to sleep instead especially by the SPCA.
