my dad doesn't seem to like my boyfriend (who i've been with for over 18 months now) and says that he is embarrased when we are together. i'm nearly 17 and dad still can't let chris feel like part of the family. dad says that it's embarrasing if we ever peck each other on the cheek when we're in public - he said that were like two dogs on heat (we never do more than hold hands, hug or occasionally give each other a peck on the cheek in public) - why is he so mean?

He probably feels like he is losing you. Dad's are like that a lot, trust me.

It seems that the problem is that your father probably feels that your boyfriend kissing you in public and it seems in front of him is very disrespecting, and of course another reason is he is your little girl, some parents just don't approve of this, and since you are just turning 17 he sees that you are tying yourself down too young and that you aren't taking notice to other things such as school, normally I would say that the parents are overreacting, but I dont think so much in this case, because they are only trying to offer their views on how you are handling your priorities at this point in your life, just step back and take a look at what they are really saying, at least you don't have parents that are that bad, some other girls have it worse to point where they aren't even allowed to date or talk to guys, consider yourself lucky and just "cool things down" around your parents.

I'm thinking that it is his way of saying that he isn't quite ready for you to be dating yet without being direct. I'm thinking that it is more his problem meaning that as a parent he is not ready for you to be grown up. I'm also thinking that he is very afraid for you and the consequences of pregnancy.

If you feel comfortable feel him out about that and see if he is able to tell you about his thoughts and feelings. If that doesn't work then just recognize it as dad not dealing with you dating and being nearly old enough to be on your own.

maybe your father sees something in your boyfriend that unfortunately your love can't see. Parents wants the best for us and when we are teenagers usually what you see and think its apropriate your parents totally disapproves of. This is just a phase once you grow a little older you will see what your father has been trying to tell you for 18 months now.
