He is docile, especially since we sold his brother. He is about 3 months old. He will go on the paper that we put out for him, but he doesn't seem too interested in using the great outdoors, especially since his brother departed.

In my opinion, placing the dog outside for a period of time will be most helpful as suggested before. The one thing I might add is that many people make the mistake of letting the dog outside after the animal has pottied on the carpet. Unfortunately, the dog will develop the idea that if he goes potty, the lady will come screaming and open the door to let him outside. This will enforce the habit of going inside the house.
Good Luck

The only thing putting papers out does is train your dog to pee in your house!! Never put papers down!!

Set a timer and take it outside every 20 mins. Go overboard on praise when it goes outside and give a treat. If it starts going inside, pick it up saying NO and run it outside. It won't take long for it to get the idea. They want to please you, ya know. It's going to take time for it to get over the loss of it's brother, so be extra loving.

Wow, that is a hard breed to housetrain i have 4 shih tzus i have had them since they were pups....3 still have an accident every now and then...i have pupppy about 7months that i am still working with. SOME shih tzus have a love about eating poop too so watch out for that. But i think you should buy a krate and keep him in there when you are letting him rest or when you are gone. Dont yell or hit your dog if does go in the house. (he will be scared and aggressive adult dog!!) Have fun with your shih tzu they are SWEEEETEST dogs!

Try just taking him into the backyard and tie him out there for about an hour or so at a time... or let him run in a fenced in yard...

Might seem cruel, but they will get the point... Had to do it with my dogs... Not Shitzus... But they are stubborn... Also try taking his messes outside and take him to them every time he makes a mess in the house... I've heard that works... But I'm unsure...

Any time your puppy finishes playing, eating or wakes up, take him outside to do his business. This is how I trained both of mine, works like a charm. Make sure you are consitent and praise him like crazy when he goes.

Maybe get another pet (if you can) to keep him interested. If not, leave him alone for a few weeks. He should stop moping after a while. Also- BE SUPPORTIVE and dont scold him

Take him outdoors as often as you can.
When he does his thing, PRAISE AND TREAT.
He will learn.
