I heard that it has to still be valid for at least 6mos before expiring to travel. Is that true?

What? I'm confused about your question. If you can clarify, maybe that would help, or maybe it's just me. Ok, think I got the question now, sorry. No, as long as it hasn't expired by the time you come back, you're fine.

it depends on the country you are going to. the passport will let you in and out ot the us as long as it is valid but some countries do require that the passport be valid for a set period of time - say 6 months. check with the country you are planning to visit.

below is what the state department advises:

Some countries require that your U.S. passport be valid at least 6 months or longer beyond the dates of your trip. If your passport expires before the required validity, you will have to apply for a new one. Please check with the Embassy or nearest Consulate of the country that you plan to visit for their requirements.

It depends on the country you're visiting. Some counties require that your passport be valid for 6 months after your trip. Check with the State Department site for foreign entry requirements: http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/brochures/brochures_1229.html
