Mardi Gras can be fun for families if they stay out of the areas where it gets real crazy. I suggest watching the parades near Napoleon and St Charles. You can also buy tickets online for the parade stands outside of Gallier Hall. Not so crowded and you let gobs of throws. There are also other non-official parades that are a lot of fun, like Krewe of Barkus. I would avoid the French Quarter on Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras, but it can be manageable in the daytime beforehand.
There is also the WW2 museum, Audubon Zoo, Aquarium of the Americas, New Orleans Museum of Art, City Park, and the Ogden Museum of Art.
The best part of Mardi Gras is the people watching. Bring a camera, there will be plenty to take pictures of. Have fun!

New Orleans is great for any age. I personally think the Aquarium of Americas is awesome--- once again for any age. Walk around the French Quarter and go to Cafe du Monde. They may be too young, but consider touring Tulane-- it is a neat school. Go to the House of Blues for lunch or dinner. If the Camellia Grill is back open, hit that for breakfast. Walk down Magazine Street, especially the blocks near Audubon Park. If you have not booked a hotel yet, I would recommend the Hampton Inn on St. Charles in Uptown.
Ok, for Mardi Gras, here is my recommendation: head over to Mobile, AL (a 2 hr drive from New Orleans). Mobile is actually the home of Mardi Gras (betcha didn't know that!), and New Orleans just stole the idea. Mobile is kinda like a mini New Orleans-- very similar archictecture and scenery (especially in down and mid town). Mobile's Mardi Gras is a lot classier than New Orleans', yet you still have the beads, crazy people, fun atmosphere, etc. Mobile's Mardi Gras court is so interesting-- you really feel like you have traveled to Europe and are witnessing a real coronation, etc. My family has been involved in it for a long time-- visit the Mobile Mardi Gras Museum-- very neat (see all the gowns and trains of past kings and queens, including some of my relatives!). If you do decide to come to Mobile, even if just for the day or two, stay in the newly renovated Battle House hotel-- i think it's now open--, go to the Gulf Coast Exploreum, Mardi Gras Museum; eat at Wintzell's, The Dew Drop, and La Pizzeria. E-mail my yahoo address if you would like more tips on this fabulous city. Have so much fun in New Orleans, and I hope you decide to visit the great Mobile, as well!

Nydia is right. I lived in New Orleans until I was 15. During Mardi Gras, it gets really crazy and fights break out everywhere. On Bourbon Street there are people having sex in the middle of the road like in that Candyman movie. There's lots of homo-activity and bar fights. If you want to go somewhere, go to Audubon Zoo or the Aquarium of the Americas in the daytime and be inside before dark. Stay uptown on St. Charles in the Historic Areas--there are lots of safe white people there. Don't go on Canal Street without a bodyguard. Good luck.

Nothing...
I lived in N.O from 13-16 and visit all the time. I am 20 now but in truth, N.O is not a city for children. Especially during Mardi Gras. Take them to the Parades, and then have them back at the hotel by 10pm.
There are teen clubs and such...but you got to be a local to know the spots.

Eat,, their is no better place to eat in the USA than New Orleans. Watch the acts on the street are really wacky and shopping of course. We also went to the swamps and took a tour on a small fishing boat looking atgators and snakes. Pretty cool.
