It's a Toshiba SD-3980SC2. It is plugged in correctly and worked in another room with the same tv but does not work in mine. Everything has batteries etc. You can insert a DVD and it seems like it might be playing but there is no audio or video. Do I have to switch something to a different mode? and if so, how?

Your on the wrong video input on your tv. Push the "video" button on your remote until you see a picture. Make sure the dvd is on and playing. The remote might have an "input" button instead of a "video" button.

It seems that the problem lies with the TV setup
Turn the TV on .
Check the TV/Video ..on the TV remote control
Make sure the DVD is in play mode and press
The button of the TV/Video and see what happens and if the connection is right then you
should have a picture & sound.

How did you connect it to your tv? Make sure your tv is on the correct input. You can usually cycle through the inputs using the remote for the tv.
