Yes! Dogs are extremely smart, but some don't have a very big attention span. Dogs use a lot of different problem solving techniqes to get what they want.
Try this to see what I mean:
Get a piece of meat (beef and bologna seems to work best) and show it to your dog. Stack 2 piles of larger books (textbooks work great, as do encyclopedias) so that they are about 8-10 inches off the ground, with about 1/2 and inch between them. Make sure they are lying flat on the ground, and that your dog won't be able to move them. Then put the meat in the 1/2 inch crack, and your dog will try several different ways to get to it. He will probably go from the front first, trying to stick his nose through the crack. Then he might try using his tongue, then try to get at it from the top. He might use a paw, but he will work until he finds a way to get to the meat. It might take a few minutes, but I assure you, he will find a way. Be sure to tell him what a smart dog is is when he finally get it!

Depends on your deffinition of smart. Most dogs are trainable, so if that says smart to you, then yes.

I don't beleive that an easy to train dog is necesarily a smart dog, though. I've got my reasons, but no desire to explain in full. All I'll say is "How smart do you think you need to be to be able to sit on command?"

I think there's more to dogs than we know already, so yes, I think they're smart.

They measure animal intelligence by the individual animal and no longer by the breed. I personally feel that aside from that instinct thing they have going for themselves they just do Human Will.
