The primal instinct is there and when they eat, it is generally observed that they will eat all you give them because it is to prevent other creatures from gobbling it up. Even if there is no competition for the food, it is still a survival instinct they have.

That is why it is better to control the amount of food your dog receives daily because most will gorge themselves if allowed.

And dogs live in the moment. They don't remember yesterday or think about tomorrow. The food is there therefore it must be eaten.

It depends, some dogs eat just a little at a time, while some will devour their whole bowl in a minute. I have a big, med, and a sm dog. i fill their bowl maybe about 2 or 3 times a week. they are not big eaters.

Dogs are a creature of opportunity, given an unlimited amount of food, they will gorge themselves. This goes back to when dogs were wild animals, and would eat at every chance to store fat for periods when no food was available

Depends on the dog and the breed. The Border Collie will eat only when it is hungry and then stop. Some mutts will pig out till they explode.

All the time---BECAUSE PEOPLE FEED THEM TOO MUCH!!!
So irritating! Why have a barrel on legs when you can have lithe, vigorous rocket dog? Because how else can I get rid of all this extra cheesecake? Oh, hey, I've got my canine land-seal. He'll eat anything.

~I'm more of a cat person, but from experience I think dogs do over eat, so you only feed them so much at a time. If you let them eat as much as they want, they would be sick.~

I think a dog has common sense to know when to stop like us humans they don't want to get sick.
