If you had your 2005 taxes prepared by a reputable preparer, call them and they will have kept a hard copy on file for you to pick up or a PDF file they can e-mail to you.
If you did them by some other means and have no way of picking up a copy, go to www.irs.gov and fill out a 4506-T to request a transcript of the 2005 tax return. If you need an actual copy then you will have to pay $39 and fill out a 4506.
But wait, there is still another option available to you. Go to the www.irs.gov web site and click on the e-services link. After filling out endless pages of information, the IRS will mail (within 28 days) a pin # so that you may access the e-services site. You may then get a transcript of your 2005 tax return this way.
Good luck and happy hunting.

Depends on what you need it for and who prepared it. If you don't need the actual return but an abstract will do then call the IRS and it will get to you in a few days. You can actually use this in a mortgage application at most banks...so check to see if you can get away with it. If your document was prepared by someone else you can get a copy from them, though it may not be a signed copy.
Otherwise it's the IRS and it costs you $39 and takes forever!

Check with your preparer first. It is very likely that your 2005 returns have not even been looked at or filed away by the IRS, so that is a poor option.

The IRS will take forever. Call the preparer - they keep copies.
