(typing fast, please excuse gram/spelling) I am reading Gen 9-12 and I am confused. The record of geneology are great BUT.........

OK so there is Canaan the Nation and Canaan the son of HAM (Noah's Grandson). Noah (after he wakes up from his drunken stupor curses Canaan, is this the city or his Grandchild. Then Abram travels to Haran. (Abrams brothers name) But Haran the person dies in the Ur. CONFUSING!!!!!

When I am reading the bible how do I tell if we are talking about a nation, a place or a person? Also In Gen 11:29 Nahor married his niece (Haran's Daughter. Why, by this time there wer so many others. Was it because it was normal to stay in "tribes".

Frequently in the Bible which contains the early history of humanity the people who made up the nations were descended from a particular person, so the nation was often called by the ancestors name.

For example, Israel the person had a number of descendants who came to be called the Sons of Israel. (Exodus 1:8-13) (Originally the "sons of Israel" referred to the literal sons of the man named "Israel," as in Exodus 1:1 &7.)

Eventually these "sons" became so numerous that they began to be called a nation, as in Joshua 3:17.

Whether it is a person, a place, or a nation should be evident from the context.

It did not become wrong to marry close relatives until the time of Moses.
