If I were to commit myself to an hour to two hours a night on an elliptical, would I achieve sufficient results? Does an elliptical machine actually burn calories and fat? My goal is to lose up to 20 pounds by May 2007. Also, using an elliptical is not the only element in my weight lost regimen. So does an elliptical do much to help burn calories and fat, and how long would I have to work out in one day to burn an ample amount of calories?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

An elliptical does do quite a lot to burn off calories. It's an efficient way to work out your arms and legs at the same time, and it really raises your heart rate. Some things to keep in mind while working out on any machine:

* your heart rate is what determines how much fat you burn, not the intensity of the workout.

* varying your exercise routine is a good thing

* any cardio workout is good for burning fat, but weight training is important too to build up muscle instead of fat

* remember that muscle weighs more than fat - you may be building up muscle, but not losing weight. The reality would be that you're in much better shape, even though your BMI or weight hasn't gone down significantly.

They say an elliptical is just as effective as running, without the strain on the knees. You can make it as strenuous as you want, depending on the level you put it on and whether you use your arms or not. When you work your arms and put it on a higher level and go at a challenging pace, you will definitely be getting a great workout!

The amount of calories you burn depends on your weight. To give you an idea, I'm 105 pounds and burn roughly 300 calories in 30 minutes on the elliptical on level 10. The more you weigh, the more calories you will burn, even on a lower level. If you do the elliptical and weight training, you'll have a smokin bod by may!

I'm a runner, and on my off days to save my knees I do the elliptical and get an awesome workout from it. My dad also lost a lot of weight from the elliptical after he had knee surgery.

Yes, ellipticals burn calories and fat, and do so with little impact.

Try this website, you enter your weight and the length of the workout, and it tells you an approximation of how many calories you burn.

For me, 195 lbs, 2 hours on an elliptical burns 1685 calories.

Ellipticals are great for working out. This is because they work your whole body out, and you will lose weight and fast. They burn lots of calories. The other great thing about ellipticals is if you get one with your arms too, you get a full body work out. Good luck!

Holy cow! Two hours a day on the elliptical might just kill you!

Honestly, it's a great aeropbic workout. It's been a while since I've used one (my new gym doesn't have one), but I lost about 30 pounds in about 3 months, using the elliptcal for 45 minutes a day.
