The active ingredient in true absinthe (made from wormwood and a variety of herbs, such as anise and star-root) is called thujone. It's chemically similar to the active ingredient in marijuana, which is tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.
If you see a bottle of absinthe for sale in the US or the EU, it probably does not contain this ingredient, or it contains too little of it to produce the characteristic "absinthe high" so revered by poets, painters and authors.
The pharmacological effects of absinthe with thujone is likened to a slow but lucid sense of euphoria combined with the drunken effect of the alcohol. Not everyone who drinks absinthe gets the hallucinations.

The ingredient that makes you hallucinate IS Wormwood oil. I know this because we have the original 60% GREEN FAIRY Absinthe. It is made in Chek Republic and I believe it's illegal but we managed to get a bottle of it!
Before this we had the substitute Absintia 70% with no wormwood , this is unfortunately quite inferior and although not illegal can be hard to find.

They probably told you to put wormwood oil into it or opium. Don't.
Absinthe wont make you hallucinate and has never made people hallucinate, that is a myth. It was originally believed that thujone from wormwood oil was similar to THC and could cause hallucinations but that has been proven false. Wormwood oil is however poisonous in large doses. Some have suggested putting opium into it because of the 19th century use of it as a tincture and poor representations of absinthe in modern films. Traditionally opium was never put in absinthe.
If you are looking to hallucinate, I would suggest some of the more popular choices.
