that depends on the region. In the northeast, or at least connecticut, children learn about it in school as a part of their curriculum.

Really only white south africans know afrikaans and its not spoken any where else unless they are living abroad. Honestly its kind of a useless language unless you are South African. Wikipedia has an article on it.

There has been a trickle of white South African emigration in the last decade, so I guess there are Afrikaans speaking communities in Australia.

No, not really. Beyond South Africa, it's really not a useful language to learn.
