Perhaps it is because there is more truth in some religions than others. Also, many "religions" are nothing more than a group with a very, very charismatic leader such as Benny Hinn. I personally don't believe anything he says, but he does have a way with words.
Also, some religions don't taut theirselves loudly at other people. Even though Buddhism is popular, I've never heard a Buddhist screaming at the top of their lungs to get you to join their belief system.

The answer is simple. Money. What is the biggest and most well know religion? What religion has it's own city? That come with money, they buy belief, they run out the competition, whether is be through slander or, back in the day, literally running them off. For me personally, religion is a joke. Don't get me wrong, I believe in God, but I do not believe in religion. I don't believe that I should be another sheep and think what the flock thinks so that I can get to heaven, I don't think that I should have to buy my way into heaven. I do believe however, that I should try to live each day to the fullest, and enjoy life, help those I can, never intentionally hurt anyone, live, love and laugh. Live by the golden rule, for those of you that don't know what that is " do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Live a life that I can be proud of, and that my children can be proud of. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I think.

Usually religions thrive because violence forces people to believe.
IE,the Crusades, the violent spread of Islam after Mohammad.

It depends on the cultures and societies in which they emerged and whether, like Christianity it suits the political authorities to adopt it as a state religion.

If you have a bunch of religions, one is bound to be the most popular. In Christianity's case, it was endorsed by Constantine and then became a major religion. Generally, they stay afloat by emotional manipulation of human insecurities.
