YOU WILL KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON AT THE TIME BUT YOU WON'T REALLY CARE. YOU SHOULDN'T FEEL ANY PAIN, JUST PRESSURE. IF YOU FEEL PAIN, THEN YOU NEED TO TELL YOUR DENTIST AND HE CAN NUMB YOU UP SOME MORE.
IT SHOULD GO SOMETHING LIKE THIS: THEY'LL PROBABLY GIVE YOU SOME "LAUGHING GAS" TO BREATHE IN, INITIALLY. THEN THEY'LL DAB SOME NUMBING MEDICINE ON THE GUM-LINE WHERE YOU'LL HAVE THE WORK DONE. THEN THEY'LL CHECK IN A MINUTE OR TWO AND ASK IF YOU'RE "FEELING IT YET" (THE LITTLE BUZZ FROM THE GAS). THEN THEY'LL GIVE YOU SOME INJECTIONS IN THE NUMB AREAS AND LET THAT SOAK IN FOR A MINUTE OR TWO. THEN THEY'LL DO THEIR THING AND YOU'LL JUST LAY THERE AND TRY TO FIGURE OUT EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO "FIX" YOUR EYES ON DURING THE PROCEDURE. MEANING, DO YOU LOOK AT THE TV, THE DENTIST'S HEAD, YOUR REFLECTION IN HIS SAFETY GLASSES, ETC. THAT'S THE HARDEST PART -- TRUST ME.

It's called twighlight sedation, generally they'll give you an injection of midazolam or something similar, which is the same thing as they use for many medical procedures (which is how I know about it). You're still conscious, but very drowsy and not really aware of what's going on around you. I would imagine they'll still use local anaesthesia before they start work on the teeth in question, so you won't be in any pain either. Generally, when you come round you won't remember anything about the procedure, it'll just be like a blank space in your memory.
Try not to worry about it, it's supposed to be really effective, and I know it works for medical procedures, I've seen it first hand, so I'd guess it'll work the same for dental things too. Good luck!

i was sedated via i.v for a gastroscopy and you dont feel anything you are still conscious the doc said i was rambling on about all sorts, and that i seemed to love the effect. When i came round i couldnt remember a thing and it has never come back to me, i think you will find sedation a pleasant feeling. You really wont care about anything. If it has become a phobia the g.p can prescribe Diazepam to help the day before and that morning. You will be fine.

I had IV sedation for fillings, cleaning all done in one visit. It is wonderful and will not feel or remember anything. Only will feel relief knowing it is over when you are woken up. When I woke up my gum was numb, so the did give an injection only after I was sedated. He did not give me the injection while I was awake. Tell the dentist you prefer not to be awake for injections.

Are you having injections or gas and air? Having had years of dental work I have never felt pain whilst treatment is being done. Injections are unpleasant and hurt like injections in the arm. Gas and air just 'sends' you. So don't worry.
To be honest the dull ache generally appears hours later when all this stuff wears off so make sure you have some pain killers ready like asprin or such like.
Good luck.

Believe me you know when your sedated, you tend to start feeling a little drunk and the effect becomes and intense. I had a minor op last May for which I was sedated before a local anaesthetic and all I can remember was feeling 'happy' drunk.
