Personally, I would get a small security camera, point it so that it can show your front door and hook it up to your VCR and record when you are gone. You can usually record up to 8 hours on one tape. This will catch the neighbors in the act. I would move the camera (this is easy with that wireless camera) to watch the street where the "poo" occurs when you are home. This way you can catch the culprit going "potty." Once you have the evidence of the other dog, go to the neighbors. If you get evidence on them, go to the police and the landlord.

Tact is so much better than retaliation. First of all, you should try asking them if they also received dog poo through the letter box. Wasn't that awful and childish of whoever did that? Have they seen any children running around who might think that was funny? Really lay in thick about how childish this sort of behavior is. Can't believe anyone would be that crass. How very low class. etc.
Also be sure that you are absolutely in the right. Make a point of walking your dog ON THE LEASH with Poop bags proudly displayed. Be scrupulous about cleaning up, even your own yard.
If anything more is said, commiserate with them. "I sure understand how frustrated you can be. I am convinced it is another dog, not mine. Maybe if we work together we can figure out which dog is doing it. I can alert you every time I walk my dog so you can be assured it is not my dog offending. What number would you like me to call?" Then do it. Be sure to call them even at 2 in the am if that's when your dog needs to go out.
Be helpful to them, help them figure out where the problem is coming from. Ask them to take a picture of your dog messing up their yard and show it to you. Explain that you are honestly convinced that your dog is not involved, but IF it is, you certainly want to know about it. Ask them to provide you with a photograph the next time they see your dog messing in their yard. You will certainly take efforts to correct the problem once you are convinced you are fault. In the meantime you both will be alert for strays, etc. Again, you certainly understand their frustration... blah blah blah.
If it continues, keep a log with dates times exact conversations as best you can remember them. Alert the landlord of the home they are renting in writing, that you are having trouble with the neighbors. If it came down to it, I suppose you could install a surveillance camera, even if it was only a fake one. You could also threaten to sue the Landlord if he can't control his tenants. It may not be something the police can get involved in, but you can sue over almost anything.
Resorting to childish revenge tactics as suggested by many of the fine Yahoo posters will only make matters worse and will significantly escalate the retaliation. Probably also get you arrested.
Good luck.

Talk to these people! Tell them that such immaturity is just absolutely ridiculous. Since your dog is so old there must be some type of schedule you keep and tell them if they would like to watch and witness that it is not your dog then they may!
Maybe you could even propose a spray called sour apple which dogs hate! if there is a dog in the garden there are safe alternatives to keeping them out. I just can't imagine people doing this!

Get a camera fitted above your door and record when you are out. I would tell the neighbours that someone has put poo through the letterbox and you are recording it from now on and then you are pressing charges against that person.

You have my sympathy. Robin D gives probably the best advice, but to add to that comment, I'd also get in touch with your local council.
Get them on-side and get their advice before your neighbours go there complaining about you. I'm not sure what powers they have, but they may have some, and will probably be more sympathetic to you if you keep communicating with them (even if you don't want to escalate the situation just yet, just let them know what is happening). You should get all the help you can in this situation.
Good luck.

A difficult one because you don't want to antagonise them into being the neighbours from hell. (even though they are in the wrong). What if you were to write a note saying exactly what you have just said on here, about you are always with your dog etc. and pop it through their letterbox. Would that be of any use do you think?

you definitely need to talk to them, explain to them its NOT your dogs feces. youre with your dog all the time because he's old. and tell them your whole story, if they dont believe you, there is not much you can do. try to get one of those little camera's that you can prop on your mail box one that doesnt look like a camera. otherwise stay home from work one day, park your car somewhere else, and when they come over to stick poop in your letter box, snap a picture. seriously. that is so juvenille. try to get evidence for the police. neighbors are annoying. :) good luck.

pick up all the dog crap in the neighborhood--import it from friends at work if you have to---once you have a really stinkin' huge bag of it, start flinging it---quietly, covertly, under cover of the night wearing dark clothing and no moon....
I mean it. They want dog sh!t, you give them dog sh!t. On their car, on their steps (NOT in their mail box, tho, that's tampering with the mail!).
Then walk away. You can even sympathize with them the next day "Oh my goodness, I bet its the same ace-hole that put POOP in MY mailbox!!!"
How awful.
And if they're renters, you must complain to the landlord what type of people he's renting to---that they are so disgusting they have poop allll over the property!

Like someone else said, compare your dogs to the stuff found. If these people are renting from an agency then find out who and tell them about this.

Try sending your dog off to a relative for a weekend or maybe even a week.they might realise then that if they still got a shitty garden then your dogs not to blame
