The cost varies by attorney and by complexity of the case. Some attorneys charge by the hour, but many charge a flat fee. As the spouse of a US citizen who was legally admitted to the US and overstayed the visa, the alien is eligible to file under section 245(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The USC will file an I-130 application package and the alien will file an I-485 adjustment of status application. The fees for the paperwork and the related medical exam will run about $800. An immigration lawyer, for a simple case as described, might charge $2500 or so as a legal fee.

For what type of benefit are you applying? Do you just need help completing a form, or are you applying to reopen a case, etc.?
It generally depends on the above factors.
If you need help completing a form, please do not hire a lawyer to help you. They will just take your money. I work with USCIS on a daily basis as a Customer Service Representative and I receive dozens of calls each and every day about how the lawyer has lost this, how the lawyer has messed up, how much money it has costed, etc... It all boils down to taking money.
If you need help completing a form, consider calling our Customer Service line first at 1-800-357-9493, or consulting the website at http://www.uscis.gov. You can also contact a Professional Forms Preparer or Community Based Organization--The latter of which I reccomend, because forms preparers can sometimes get just as expensive as an attorney.
If you are re-opening a case because of a denial, or filing an affidavit or motion, then immigration lawyers are provided at no expense. In order to find the most reliable, I suggest you contact your local office and go in for an appointment. The only way to do so is through the internet at this website: http://infopass.uscis.gov... There you will be able to choose the time and date of your appointment and if you do not get one at a time in which you prefer, check back daily because they are posted each and every day.
If you are hiring a lawyer to represent you in general immigration matters, such as deportation or removal, it will cost a very large amount as the previous people have mentioned. I do wish you luck though if it is for legal matters because every person, illegal or legal, deserves a fair chance.

If you have money and visible means of legal support, it will not be hard for you to get to be a US Citizen. If you are non-working, going on welfare type of people then it will take years. Hiring an attorney can cost from $1000 to $10000.

I know they charge sooo much that it is ridiculous! Try to do things on your own and save your money, unless you got into some bad stuff then you may need a lawyer. Good Luck!
