The spoon should never be used for soup if you are entertaining, it is much more fashionable to use a straw.

* The golden rule is ALWAYS work from the OUTSIDE, IN. Use the outside knife and fork for the first course (entrée), and then simply work inwards for each subsequent course.
* Knives are always to the right, and forks are always to the left.
* The soup spoon, if required, will always be on the extreme right if being served as a first course, or second in from the right if being served as a second course.
* Dessert cutlery will always be at the top of the place setting with the fork facing right and the spoon positioned above this with the bowl facing left.

Soup Spoon goes on the right. Position depends on what the first course is. If you have a course before the soup, the cutlery for the first course will go to the right of the soup spoon.( forks on the left)
Otherwise just wing it! no one will notice if the food is good and they have a drink in them!
Best of luck.

John said it best, first. One always places the silver in order of use. If, for example, salad or a seafood cocktail were to be served before the soup, that fork would be placed first, then the soup spoon and so forth.

On the right, the silverware is set up in order of use based on the courses the ones used first on the outside, forks on the left, knifes and spoons on the right.

If soup is the first course, place it on the right, outside the knife.

It goes on the outside right, not across the top, that is where the pudding spoon may be placed

All of the above are correct. (Assuming that the first course is not something that you would eat with a spoon.)
