I've read some stuff about rolling pins against shins and punching boards... do you have any recommendations?

You don't have to do too much damage to your knuckles...but don't expect to get any results in the near future.

You basically have to just hit stuff, you don't have to bloody up your knuckles....thats gonna cause callouses (sp?) rather than physically making the bone stronger.

The science of it is that your bones are porous...have lots of holes in them....if stress is constantly applied, eventually body reacts by making the holes smaller.

The rolling pins on the shins..... i heard that was more for desensitizing the nerves. Doing that will result in your not having feeling in the shins....i can see that causing some hardness though.

Normally in class...I use my shins to block kicks....A good kick to the shin can snap it, but in a class setting where kicks are generally pulled, gives them a chance to toughen up.

What i normally do is punch the wall a couple times throughout the day. Not too hard ...knuckles arne't sore at all at the end of the day. I get about 50 punches in a day i'd say. i've been doing this every day for about 6 years.

Shins, i hear its better, for the hardness, to get someone to kick you in the shins...you and the other person take turns. usually using the top of your foot to make that area of your foot stronger too.

Since i do'nt have someone to do this with, i usually just get something round...and hit my shins while watching tv.

I heard in my karate training that the ancient people who lived in days of fighting would hit their hands (esp the knuckles) against hard stones till they were chafed and sore. A week passed, it healed up, and they'd go at it again. They finally built up their hands so well that when they went out everyday and had to pass by the robber barons and fighters, their hands were like fists of stone!

Believe it or not I did it for two weeks...hit my knuckles on a cement wall about five or six times. I couldn't stand it any longer. Not the biggest difference, but definitely a difference.

Wrap your fists up or use boxing gloves, punch a hard surface ie. Wall. then drink milk or calcium supplements to replace the weak bone. Just be careful and dont go crazy beating the crap out of a wall or you'll end up doing some serious damage...be sensable about it!

Now for the record the stuff you see on TV is the stuff you see on TV. There are some whom disfigure thier bodies in the name of martial arts and it is very extremely rare. I saw a Karate Sensei from Tokoyo whom beat his toes straight on with a 2*4 every morning. Very strange but I'd hate to get it from that guys foot the blisters were horrifying!!!
If you study martial arts and give it your best effort and do practice on your own, and really study and apply what you learn. You need nothing else. Your art will grow with you.

A good technique for building up toughness of your fists is to wear hand wraps whenever you train, but don't wash or change the hand wraps until they literally fall off your hand. This helps by gradually decreasing the support that the wraps give to your knuckles and gradually increasing their toughness.

Try iron palm training. It takes a long time, but it's worth it. You'll have a tougher fist without doing permanent damage to yourself.

I My self use to punch walls (cement) ,but only as hard as I could take it. Eventually you will find you can punch harder as you go.
