Some people who answered said that the picture will be bad, will it be really bad, noticibly bad? Worse than if i just had my old tube tv? I want to buy a tv thats big and thin and the ones that i was looking at were all hdtv and i dont want a tube tv couse i dont really have the space for it, so if i do buy the tv will i be disapionted with the picture to a point where it will be borderline unbearable? In the living room we have a 7 year old tv (33" tube tv i think) will the picture of the HDTV without having HD programing or an HD box be worse than what i already have or if i were to get a new tube tv that was not HD?

The non-hd channels on my 50" hd-plasma look fine. I mostly watch non-hd programming on it anyway. I don't see a difference between this TV and my CRT. I guess some people are extremely picky and say that it's worse. I guess it's a matter of judgement so trust your own not others. Go to a retailer and ask a salesman to switch to a non-hd channel and judge for yourself.

On bad signals, the larger screen amplifies the bad picture. Also, because the screen has higher resolution, bad signals will look worse because the TV can show all the bad signals instead of just sorta blurring it all together.

I don't think it's a big deal. You just have to understand that not all channels are going to be crystal clear. Things might look a little worse, but I don't think it's horribly low.

If you don't want to pay for HD, just get an external HD converter (if the TV doesn't have one built in) and an HD antenna. That way, you can see the local channels in HD if it's available in your area.

The picture won't be any worse than the one you've got. I have an HDTV (50" Toshiba) and I had HDTV in NY cause the cable company provided it free. Then I had Digital Satellite (Directv) not HD and the picture was great. Now I have basic digital cable and it's not nearly as good as satellite, but it's better than analog.

The best thing to do is call your cable company and find out how much an HD Tuner will be, most provide the tuner for free and have decent packages on HD channels.

You will be ok as long as you never look at an HD signal. Once you see what HD looks like (especially on a football game), you will find the normal broadcast unbearable.

PS, you can also get a HD antenna seperate from your cable to be able to watch the local HD broadcasts for free. (nbc, abc, fox, cbs)

I went to Circuit City and asked if they could switch the feed on the display to regular TV. They did, and it lets you see for yourself.
