It will only be ruined for you by other tourists if you go where they go.. There are still unspoiled beaches, etc.. I live in Central Thailand in a small farming village and near a small city - - we rarely see a tourist though they certainly pass by on the busses to CM.. Hey, I was in Hua hin a few months ago and there were so many westerners that they seemed to out number the Thais.. it felt weird.. but these tourist spots are just small pin pricks on the map... the majority of the country is not over-touristed.. Want specific suggestions? drop me an email and tell me what you are looking for.. I am sure I can help you find places off the beaten path..

i do not think so, on the other hand i think some tourist has been ruined their trip by some thai!
i have seen some of a very beautiful village in thailand.
tourist both thai and foreigner went their because of its frest green surrounding nature and the unique local culture and people.
then some greedy people in the local goverment turned the surrounding sidehill to a golf club.
cut down all the tree around that area resulting in flushing during the rainy season.
sex bar and nightclub pop up in that small town on n on...
local goverment call it developing, but i call it destroying.
and it ended up receiving least and least tourist number.
i would blame this to the tourist authority and the thai government.
they do not invest in a long term tourist industry.
they will just do what ever can get money fast.
they want to turn every thing to patpong or pattaya.
you can not blame the tourist for that.
people go there for the nature.
if people want some thing like patpong, they will go to patpong.
no point to travel 1000 of Km out of bangkok to see some thing similar to bangkok in the middle of a jungle!!!
i hope thai tourist authority will understand this point someday.

Sadly, it is not the true tourists who are ruining Thailand. It is those people who like to take advantage of an accomodative culture and try to turn the place into something like their own backyard back home. These are the ones who do not care for the culture or people and are justthere for their own personal western fun.
Thailand is still a good country to visit, but I do hope responsible tourists are the ones who will make it good.

Hardly so, sure there are the red light districts they exist in many cultures including first world country's. In Canada you can't buy a newspaper without finding a single page entirely devoted to escort agencies. Any one with half a brain knows this is nothing more than a front for prostitution. Despite that no one complains. So I don't see why Thailand should be centered out by all these pretentious moralists for its seedy nightlife.
If the image of ladies dancing on poles offends you then go elswhere. But to tarnish an entire countries reputation based on a small minority of Issan ladies struggling to feed their up country families makes you a self rightious ***.

Laos is meant to be like Thailand was 20 years ago. Chewang in Koh Samui has been hit by starbucks, KFC etc but try Koh Phangan you gotta get a boat there which is probably why mass tourism hasn't hit YET!! :o)

Perhaps. There are too many over-touristed areas, but there are still places you can find with few tourists so you can have that getaway you hoped for. The South coast where the tsunami hit is still a great place to go, and actually there are beautiful beaches that are basically deserted you can go too. Just stay away from the main tourist parts if that's what you want.
