My sisters and I are permanent residents. My dad however became a citizen before we all turned 18. I was told by someone that since my dad became a citizen before we all turned 18, that we don't have to go through the naturalization process. All we have to do is pay a fee to get our citizenship. Can any of you tell me if that is true and how would I go about doing that? Please no smart/snide remarks--only people who actually know what they are talking about.

You gain citizenship automatically if:
1. at least one parent is a USC (by birth or naturalization),
2. you are under 18, and
3. you reside in the US and in the custody of the USC parent through legal admission for permanent resident.
[Immigration and Nationality Act section 320.]

INA 320 took effect Feb. 26, 2001, so all of the above requirements had to have occurred after that date. If eligible, you will file Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship. The details on what proof you need to file can be found in the form instructions. You can still file the form now that you are over 18.

I believe you still need to go through the process and pay fees to become a Naturalized Citizen.

They best way to really find out is calling INS and they will tell you for sure. Other than that you will get all kinds of answers and some may not lead you in the right direction.

Sorry this is not true. If you go to www.uscis.gov it will tell you that you have to fill out an application and must take the test and score at least 85%. The application fee is $330 plus biometrics is required also. The biometrics fee is $70. The total as you can see is $400. If you fail the test then you have to reapply. The test is on www.uscis.gov also. The test is really a history test that you must pass. Really if you study for an hour a day for two weeks you should be able to pass the history test.
