Most People Inherit the Tendency for Dark Circles

Black or dark circles under or around the eyes can be caused by many different factors. The following are the most common causes of those unattractive dark circles.

HEREDITY
Like varicose veins, dark circles under the eyes are usually an inherited trait. If you have dark circles, there is a good chance that others in your family also have them. The skin under the eye is very thin. When blood passes through the large veins close to the surface of the skin it can produce a bluish tint. The more transparent your skin, also an inherited trait, the darker the circles appear.

EXPOSURE TO THE SUN
Even in darker skinned people, exposure to sunlight, especially during the summer months, can cause a higher-than-normal level of skin pigmentation (melanin) under the eyes.

ALLERGIES, ASTHMA and ECZEMA
Any condition that you have that causes your eyes to itch can contribute to darker circles under the eyes because rubbing or scratching the skin can darken the skin. Hay fever sufferers particularly will notice under-eye "smudges" during the height of the allergy season. Some food allergies can also cause the area under the eyes to appear darker.

MEDICATIONS
Any medications that you are taking that causes blood vessels to dilate, can cause circles under the eyes to darken. Because the skin under the eyes is very delicate, any increase blood flow shows through the skin.

NUTRITION
The lack of nutrients in the diet, or the lack of a balance diet, can contribute to the discoloration of the area under the eyes.

FATIGUE, LACK OF SLEEP
A lack of sleep or excessive tiredness can cause paleness of the skin, which again allows the blood underneath the skin to become more visible and appear more blue or darker.

PREGNANCY and MENSTRUATION
The skin can also become more pale during pregnancy and menstruation, which again allows the underlying veins under the eyes to become more visible.

AGE
If you have a propensity to have dark circles under you eyes, as you grow older, they are likely to become more noticeable and permanent. Excess folds of skin under the eyes will also make dark circles more pronounced.

The following is a link to a great article about how to combat dark circles. Hope the information helps :)

CAUSES
Dark under-eye circles are a familiar problem for a lot of women. The purplish color along with puffiness is the result of tiny blood vessels that have poor circulation due to stress, lack of sleep or, unfortunately, heredity.
To some degree this process is again controlled by our genes and family patterns, but it is also influenced by things which damage the skin such as too much Ultraviolet A light (UVA).
Some conditions that cause bags include heart, thyroid, kidney and liver problems, high blood pressure and premenstrual bloating. Some medications can also cause fluid and bags.

TREATMENTS
Euoko Eye Brightening Dark Circle Gel
Price: £69.95

This light gel encourages circulation to eliminate dark circles under the eyes and restore a bright, glowing tone.

HERBAL TREATMENTS:-
Tea bags are very soothing if laid warm upon the closed lids. They will help relieve the pain of a stye and reduce under eye puffiness. If the tea bags are not easily obtainable saturate cotton wool pads in the tea. Rose hip tea bags and papaya tea bags are those most popularly recommended by beauticians to get rid of 'bags under the eye.

Witch hazel Make cooling compresses with refrigerated witch hazel to lay on the eyelids but make sure that it is used only externally as it can smart very painfully if it infiltrates beneath the lid. Used under the eyes it will reduce puffiness.

Honey Take 600ml(1 pint) of boiling water, I handful of eyebright and 3 tablespoons of honey. Pour the water over the eyebright and leave until cool. Strain then dissolve the honey in the infusion. Soak cotton wool pads in this solution and leave them on the eyes for 20 minutes to relieve soreness. This remedy was also believed to improve the eyesight.

Hi Lucy..I want a best answer for this..
they're caused by allergies (usually not food allergies but dust, animals, pollen)

or, lack of sleep ,or lack of restful sleep

A build up of toxins..namely from acidic foods

THEE very best thing is to drink lots of water daily..to not over-indulge in alcohol as this gives the liver too much work and adds to the problem

If u smoke..STOP!its easy..I did and believe me Ive fuk all willpower

Forget expensive gels and creams close your eyes and put a cold wet used tea-bag resting on them for 20 mins..very refreshing and reduces dark circles

This question has already been asked once today.. try using the search tool.

I read that toxins cause the eyes to darken and lack of sleep produces these toxins; or sleep prevents the production of this toxin.
You should sleep more!

Hope this helps.

right i work in care so hopefully i can shed a little light on this for you,one of my clients recently had the same problem as yourself and we all thought the same thing....lack of sleep, and so arranged an appointment at the docs, after seeing the doc having a chat with him about sleeping patterns ect..the doc replied that the dark circles around the eye area are not from lack of sleep but from not drinking enough fluids!!!,so my dear have a look at how much fluid you drink and maybe up it slightly see how you get on....have you been to your g.p and had a chat with him about it maybe he could shed some light????

Lack of sleep is one way you get dark circles but if you do not wash off your make up before bed (especially mascara) it will also cause dark circles and extreme puffiness around the eye area. ALWAYS wash make up off before going to sleep. You could try tea bags to the eye to reduce swelling ( peppermint tea works best) or cold sliced cucumbers placed over the eyes. Hope this helps!

Lack of sleep. Sleep more, and if you put cold spoons on your eyes when you wake up in the morning, it should take down puffiness if there is any, and take some of the color away. There are also creams at the store that help with undereye circles.

I know mine are caused by high cheekbones. Someone told me that the higher the cheekbone, the more sunken in your eye sockets are. I don't know if you can prevent them. After you get them, a dermatologist will have to help bleach or laser. Under eye creams don't help, I have tried most of them. Good luck!
