Lineage was very important in the Jewish culture. That is why the book of Matthew was written with Jewish readers in mind, while the gospel of Mark (more Gentile oriented) skips over Jesus's birth and lineage. It can get boring but it had/has a purpose historically.

Why is it that so many who call themselves Christian believe it is OK to skip the teachings by Jesus of the importance of ancestry in the "begats"? How could you not want to learn the genealogy of your God? I hear excuses like "Oh, that part is boring and I pay no attention to it" and "That isn't the part that matters; other parts do" and I have to ask - where in the Bible does God say you can 'pick and choose' what is most important? Isn't this the sentiment that causes wars? If one can take what they 'believe' out of the bible and ignore the rest, he or she cannot claim to be a true Christian.

Let me give an example, even though I may be attacked or lose the thumbs-up war. If a Christian went to heaven and told God "I didn't allow homosexuals to have any of the same freedoms I do because there's one part in the Good Book that says its a sin. I've committed in my lifetime, oh, about 25,000 sins but since that is not one of them I decided I should choose what 'is' and what is not a sin. However, since the Begats are numerous and varied and dull, I didn't look through them and never learned your heritage. Sorry." - I imagine God would say "Well, my child, you went around impersonating me, telling everyone what is right and wrong, committing the highest sin of blaspheming me by showing hatred and malice toward a group of people and saying it was in my name, and then skipped over the passages telling you everyone is a sinner - yes, you too - and decided you had the right to choose a punishment for any sin you 'believe in' as long as it is not your own? Did it say somewhere in my Will to just ignore passages you don't like? And do you really think you're going to get in here?"

In Christianity it is clear that man is not equipped with the same tools as God to pick and choose the importance and relevance of passages in the Bible. It seems impossible to truly follow in the light of God by impersonating what one thinks He would do or what one wants Him to do in any given situation. I would be hard-pressed to call anyone that believes they can decide what and what not to read in the Bible a Christian. After all, isn't it the Word of God?

everything that is written in the bible was written for a reason, there is no idle word written in the bible. The begats are mainly used when the genelogy is given. Other than that, i'll use a New King James translation or the Complete Jewish Bible for the most accurate translation from the greek and hebrew writings

I'm pagan, but I've studied the bible. I wasn't really moved by the begats. I think the whole thing is mostly interesting. Lousy ending, tho.

BY BEGAT IT SIMPLY MEANS 'PROCREATED' OR CAUSED A CHILD TO BE BORN. IN THE BOOK OF GENESIS 5:12-32 YOU WILL FIND THE GENERATIONS AFTER ADAM.
IT'S ONLY A KEEPING OF RECORDS OF WHO CAUSED WHOSE BIRTH.

The whole bible is undecipherable unless by the spirit. Even the bagats are important as I have recently found out. Its amazing what you can learn when you read with the spirit as your guide.

Those parts were obviously written by obssessive-compulsives. Either they're describing the entire life contributions of some very boring people or some chapters got lost.

Just begattin' past it unless you need to know specific generational lines. The wisdom you can get from The Bible is more than that.
