Dogs generally go into heat on a 6 month cycle, some cycle at 8 months (my chihuahuas have always cycled on an 8 month cycle). It is not really possible to breed her that many times a year: gestation is about 2 months, puppies nurse for 2 months, and generally bitches do not go into heat until their puppies are atleast 3 months (sometimes more), so that would be 7 months right there.
If you are breeding a dog, it should really not be breed more than once a year; and she should not be bred the initial heat after the puppies were weaned. You can do so, but really ought not to (there is a very reputable and phenomenally knowledgable nationally recognized Veterinarian specializing in breeding who may argue that you can do so...but i do not believe he recommends it).
I also do not believe in breeding a dog more than 3-4 times in their life; and no earlier than 3 years of age. There are some dogs out their that love motherhood so much they would take care of anything- one my now passed away chi's raised a litter of 4 kittens and a skipperkee puppy (in both cases the mothers had died). But again, that does not mean you should necessarily breed them over and over again.
Your gut instinct about the guy is absolutely right. I would argue that he does not care about the dogs or the breed and merely wants money. Spay your girl and spoil her rotten...she does not sound like she came from a great place.

Most females come into heat twice a year, but they can vary depending on the breed as well as the individual dog. No dog should ever be bred more than once a year. During the pregnancy the Mother is depleted of calcium and needs time to recover from that.
As a breeder myself I always consider the mothers health before and after every breeding. There is no way a mother can fully recover from birthing a litter that fast. The pups are probably being deprived of nutrition during the pregnancy as well. He is jeapordizing the health of his female as well as the health of the pups.
If he is truly breeding one female that many times a year versus 4 females once a year he should be turned in for animal cruelty. No breeder breeds that much with the health of their pets in mind.

Jiminey Crickets! Get your dog spayed - if she's had that many litters she's pretty well worn out! Poor baby. I do not recommend you continue breeding your dog. However, I think you may have misunderstood what the breeder told you. I think the breeder must have told you that he bred her 3 or 4x. Dogs generally only come into heat 2x yr so breeding more frequently than that would be impossible. Also, the dog should be allowed to heal for 2 heats before she is bred again.
Do your dog the greatest favor of her life and have her spayed. It just might save her life. Poor thing.

Dogs typically come in heat twice a year (every 6-7 months). Next to impossible to breed a dog 3-4 times a year, but even breeding them twice a year is NOT good for them at all! They should have at least a year between litter, but 18 months is much better!

Oh no thats not possiable cause they only go into heat 2 times a year so he could have bred her 2 times a year, which is awful cause that is basically killing the dog, yes I think you are right he was trying to make her into a puppy making machine, I would have her fixed if you dont want to breed her but if you do breed her then only breed her every other heat,, but if he said he breed her every heat it maybe best for her to be spayed cause she needs to have a break from going through that pain,, but like i said if you do want to breed her then only breed her every other heat to where she is only having one litter a year

Puppy-mills are the only ones that overbreed their dogs (Eg. every time they're in heat).
1. Turn the guy into the AKC or UKC, whatever the registry is
and
2. Have the dog spayed - She's had enough litters!

you're right, sounds like your dog came from a puppy mill. you should turn him in. most dogs only go into heat once or twice a year. i'm surprised he let her go if she was producing that well. have her checked over completely by a vet and have her spayed if you haven't done so already and turn him in.

well idk about silky terrier's but i think most dogs go into heat about twice a year.....it isn't bad for a dog....if you wanted to breed her...if you don't you can have her spaded so she won't go into heat and won't have any pups......
