If you're in the UK then check out the ePupz site for prices ... seems to range from £900 to £1,500 for puppies (though there is a one year old for sale for £600)
Crosses are cheaper - £500 for a cute fuzzy little chihuahua/maltese with a black ear ... aww.

Maltese is a beautiful dog. I used to have one. You can find a pure breed for about $500. I dop not recommend ever buying a dog over the internet. I would also not recommend going to a pet shop either. Find a local breeder, or a family that breeds home raised puppies. The longer the puppies bond with the mommy, the better temperment your puppy will be. Good luck.

It will cost you hundreds initially to buy one and thousands in vet bills guaranteed! They are famous for having loads of genetic problems and issues. You cant really do a lot with a maltese either. Long walks in the countryside are a definate no. It wouldnt get to the end of the block! If you want a small breeed you should go to the local rescue centre and pick a terrier breed. They are much more hardy and robust and you can take them out and really enjoy them.

Well, this really depends on where you look. Internet sites are most likely always pricey. If you REALLY want a maltese, try looking around really really hard. If you have done your best though, and can't seem to find anything, then maybe you should just move on to a different breed of dog that you are intrested in. Sorry, but that's the only way it is going to work.

It depends on the breeding. If it has championship blood lines the owners can very well justify the cost. It's up to you if you want to pay that amount. I have a great dane pup with championship bloodlines that is worth $4000.

I did a bit of searching, but like you said, the internet seems to be really expensive. They averaged at around £900 for a purebreed! I would recommend visiting a local dealer and enquiring there.
