When pressing *69 to see who called, it doesn't work. Anything else besides paying the high cost of Caller ID to trace the number ?

If you are being harrassed or threatened by a caller who is blocking their ID, or receiving obscene phone calls, you can usually dial a special code (*57 is usually call trace) and then contact the police.

The phone company is not legally allowed to provide you with the phone number for a caller whose ID is blocked or when *69 doesnt work. However, if you use the call trace feature and are willing to go ahead and initiate a complaint with the police, they will release the information to the police and the person can be charged or prosecuted through that means.

Call trace service should be used in serious situations only. If you use this service, you should be prepared to contact the police and have the caller charged.

You probably won't be able to use it to stop annoying salesmen from calling from various companies...for that you need to have your name on the do-not-call registry (if one exists in your area) and hope that salesperson's company respects that list.

And you might have trouble tracing a cell-phone. I have heard that these will almost always cause *69 to not work.

How To Trace A Call When Caller Blocked Their Number? -- https://backgroundreports.im/phonelookup

Get a service where you will not accept blocked calls. The only way the caller can get through to your phone is if they temporarily unblock their number.

If you don't want to do that, the only way you can do anything is if the caller is harassing or making obscene phone calls. What you need to do is leave the phone off the hook, call 911 (from a cell phone if available) and sometimes the authorities may be able to trace the call, especially if it's something serious (like a threat on your life or bomb threat to your building or home).

Good luck.

It depends where you live, I worked for a telephone company in Canada for 18 years and I know for a fact that you can trace a call but the telephone company won't tell you who the caller is unless you go through your local police. Here in Canada to trace a call it's *50 but every carrier uses different numbers and you pay $5.00 for the one time use.

Caller ID will not work either. It will show unavailable number or something like it. Your best bet is to contact the phone company and tell them you are getting pranked by the person who last called and see if they will trace it that way. Due to privacy issues they probably won't but you never know if you don't try.

i worked at THE phone company for years. if the *69 doesn't work, neither will anything else, including caller id. it is the same technology just in a visual rather than audio form. an unidentifiable call is unidentifiable.remember the phone co is a business and pretty much any service they offer is going to come at a price. there are services to id calls, when id-able, services to block calls, services to trace calls (but again, it has to be identifiable first.) if it's a one time thing, or occasional, i wouldn't worry about it. unfortunately, worse case scenario. .. if it is not identifiable, but it is bothering you enough, your best option is to change your tn, and while that may be a pain, you have to weigh the pros and cons. good luck.

A reverse cell phone lookup service I have used is http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=179

Enter the number in the system and they will tell you a lot of informations about the phone number and the person who owns it.
If they have extra details you will have to pay for the report.
Free reverse phone lookup sites generally don't provide anything interesting. To get further information, money will have to be paid. The free searches do not provide much more than what can be found through the phone book.
The best thing is that you can get informations about anyone!!

SteveN is correct you can have the call traced by the phone company. Only have this done if it is a harasing or malicious call. And you most likely have to contact your local authorities to do this.
