A zero configuration, easy to use player is VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
I use it as a backup, when nothing else works.
If you can afford to spend some time with configuration, definitely get the various codecs. You'll want right away: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Koepi_XviD.htm since a majority of AVIs have the video stream in Mpeg-4 (DivX, XviD, etc.). You can spend some time getting other codecs like FFDShow (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm ), Real Alternative, and Quicktime Alternative.

requires less memory and easy to use GUI

DIVX seems to work best for me. It can play nearly all types of files including .avi.
