I recommend to feed twice per day for life, as dogs get more nutrition from their food, if it is divided in smaller feedings, twice per day.
My own dogs eat small amounts at each feeding, so I free-feed them..keeping fresh food down all day. this helps prevent the deadly bloat, common in deep chested breeds.
In the wild, dogs hunt morning and evening, when prey is going to water.

I would definitely you suggest you NOT free feed a beagle. If my beagle had the choice, he would gorge until he threw up, then keep right on eating! Beagles are nothing but stomach and nose and voicebox.

Feeding twice a day is better for most dogs. Split his ration in half and give some in the morning and some in the evening.

It is a lot easier to feed a dog once a day, but in actuality it is healthier to feed them breakfast and dinner, and you can feed them less if you feed them twice a day. I have five great danes, (i show dogs and my mother is a breeder) I feed the veteran and puppy twice a day, but the other three i feed at night. So either way is fine, but until your beagle is around 18 months it is better to feed it twice a day, because it is growing and all.

Most dog foods have feeding guidelines on the packaging. Some people feed once a day, others twice and some leave food down all day. As long as he/she is getting the recommended amount per day and is at an acceptable weight, it really doesnt matter how many times a day you feed him/her.

Happy New Year!

I've heard that it's best to feed twice a day, but I feed my 9 month old lab puppy once in the morning. He gets treats in the evening, though.

Beagles are prone to eating too much.

Feed him small portions twice daily, then he won't feel so hungry so often as if you feed once per day.

Most dogs sleep better at night if they have eaten. I feed morning and night.

Depends on if you can free feed him - meaning just fill up his bowl in the morning and leave it - if he is good at controlling how much he eats then free feeding is the easiest - you just fill up the bowl when it is empty.
Some dogs will over eat so free feeding is not an option. you can give him half of his daily portion in the a.m. and then when you come home in the evening or when you have dinner feed him the other half after you are done with your meal.

I have a 9 month old poodle-havenese dog. He weighs 15 pounds, and eats a little over a cup a day. We feed him 3 times a day in smaller amounts. My vet recommended this because of his smaller size. She said it promotes healthy eating in smaller quantities, and less of the extra weight gain. It works well for us.

You should feed him 2-3 times a day acording to the packaging labels on the food. Never leave the food out all day for a puppy because they can over eat and that is how they get to be overweight. Do what is recommeneded on the food label
